Thorn denies league return

Brad Thorn has not shut the door on a return to the National Rugby League, but it won't be this year.

Reports at the weekend suggested Thorn was ready to return to the Brisbane Broncos as early as next week, but the former Australian rugby league backrower has confirmed he will stay with rugby union side Canterbury and see out the National Provincial Championship season in New Zealand.

Thorn switched to rugby after the Broncos won last year's NRL premiership and was a regular member of the Crusaders Super 12 squad. Thorn has an option in his contract to leave if he is not happy.

"Any rumours about a mid-season return to the Brisbane Broncos are absolute rubbish," Thorn said. "I'm really looking forward to the rest of the NPC season. I'm committed to the Rugby Union.

"I haven't made any decision about what I will be doing next year. I will think about that at the end of the season."

When he signed for Canterbury last year, he said he would love to play for the All Blacks.

"After a year, we'll see how things are going," Thorn said. "If I'm really enjoying my rugby and taking little steps in improvement, then it would be great. If things don't go well, then there's an option to quit."
