Canada cancel Wallaby Test
September 21, 2001

Canadian rugby authorities on Thursday bowed to pressure and cancelled the trouble-plagued Test match against touring Australia next month.

Keith Wilkinson, Canada's national team director, said Rugby Canada had written to the Australia Rugby Union (ARU) and informed them they had scrapped the Oct 27 Test.

"Rugby Canada has written to the ARU to tell them that unfortunately it will be impossible to hold this match," Wilkinson told AFP here Thursday.

Canadian rugby has been in uproar since the dismissal of popular national team coach Dave Clark, with the country's top 60 players all vowing to boycott internationals unless the Australian is re-instated.

Australia had already asked the International Rugby Board for permission to withdraw from next month's game on the grounds that Canada could not guarantee they would be able to field a full-strength side. - Sapa-AFP
