Sailor set to face Waratahs?
September 24, 2001

Wendell Sailor's switch from league to union may take effect within a fortnight, as the Brisbane Broncos winger gets set to don a Queensland Reds jersey as early as Saturday week.

The curtain came down on the dynamic winger's rugby league career with the Broncos 24-16 preliminary final loss to Parramatta, but his rugby union debut for the Reds looks likely to be a clash with the NSW Waratahs at Ballymore on October 6.

An emotional Sailor conceded after the match he would not have thought about playing in the interstate match had the Broncos made the grand final, but the stage is now set for a union debut several months earlier than expected.

"I think I might be having a week on the drink then I think I might have to play the union match in two weeks," Sailor told AAP.

"They asked me a couple of months ago and I said I'd see what happens."

"If we had of made the grand final I definitely wouldn't have played (for the Reds), but just to see where I'm at, I might just have a bit of a run off the bench."

Queensland rugby union officials would be licking their lips at the chance to use Sailor as an impact player against the Waratahs, with the Test winger back to his best after a slow start to the year.

Sailor, who scored four tries in the Broncos' 44-28 win over St George Illawarra the previous weekend, was a handful for the Eels every time he touched the ball.

"I just worried too much about what people were thinking this year. I think I came back a bit cocky," Sailor said of his disappointing start to the year.

"I probably regretted signing (with the Australian Rugby Union) a few times at the start of the year."

"There's a lot more pressure than I expected. (But) I don't regret going. I just wish I could have played at a level I have been accustomed to all year. Things don't always happen the way you want them to."

Sailor, who played 189 first grade games for the Broncos and was a member of four grand final-winning teams, was clapped from the field by his teammates.

The 27-year-old admitted he would miss the Broncos, but would continue to support the club and call on coach Wayne Bennett for support.

When asked what he would miss, Sailor said: "The camaraderie. I think Wayne Bennett especially."

"I have had some ups and downs in rugby league and he's never wavered from his trust in me. I just think he'll get a few calls. If I'm ever down and out he always knows what to say."

"I think I'll be a season ticket holder when I'm in town. My boy loves the Broncos and he's not going to understand next year when we're not going to the Broncos and we're going to Ballymore, hopefully Ballymore anyway."

"He's a big Chris Walker fan so I'll have to settle him down a bit."

"It's a special club. I don't think you actually leave it. You don't leave the Broncos. You always come back to it."

"I think I'm going to be spending a lot of time at the Broncos too even when I am at union."
