Wallabies to tackle Oxford Uni
October 2, 2001

Former Wallaby flanker Brett Robinson has come to the rescue of the world champions in their search for quality opposition on the upcoming tour of Europe.

Robinson, who now studies at Oxford, has organised for the University team to meet the Wallabies at its Iffley Road ground on November 4 in their final hit-out before the Test against England at Twickenham on November 10.

The Wallabies were left with a severe shortage in preparation for the England Test after the international against Canada was cancelled due to a strike involving that country's leading players.

Robinson and Wallaby coach Eddie Jones, who shared leadership roles at the ACT Brumbies, discussed a potential clash between Australia and Oxford before it was arranged through the Rugby Football Union.

Another match has been arranged against a National League XV at Welford Road on Sunday, October 28 and Oxford University the following weekend, with the touring South Africans also facing the National League side in Worcester on Wednesday, November 21.

"The English National Divisions proved last year against South Africa that there is significant depth and talent within the squads outside the Premiership," said RFU operations director Terry Burwell.

"Oxford University has an extremely prestigious game against Australia and they are confident that this will be well attended on the day."

Meanwhile, the ARU is awaiting word from French club Biarritz after requesting winger Joe Roff return to Australia for a pre-tour training camp in Coffs Harbour next week.

Roff kicked a penalty goal in Biarritz's surprise European Cup loss to Bath last weekend and Jones wants him home to prepare for the Wallabies' end-of-season tour, despite more European Cup commitments.
