Wallabies covered by $1m-a-man insurance

The Wallabies will be insured for A$1million each against death of disability when they embark on their seven match tour of Europe on Saturday.

The Sydney Daily Telegraph reported that the Australian Rugby Union took out the policy following fears of terrorist attacks in response to the continuing war in Afghanistan.

The cover includes a collective ceiling of $10m in payments, significantly reducing the insurer's exposure should tragedy strike the 30-man touring party en masse during their six-week assignment.

Confirming details of the Wallabies' insurance plan was a priority of the Rugby Union Players' Association this week before the world champions head for London on Saturday for a trip that includes Tests against Spain, England, France and Wales.

It was also one of the major topics raised by players' partners when they met ARU officials at the team's camp in Coffs Harbour on Monday.

According to RUPA boss Tony Dempsey, it was imperative players be covered under the policy against acts of war or terrorism as well as accidents leading to death or permanent disability.

The Rugby Union Players' Association and the ARU worked on finalising the cover to all parties' satisfaction. ARU managing director John O'Neill commented, "We would always make sure they're covered," he said.
