Wallabies arrive with a bang
October 22, 2001

The Wallabies have arrived in London for their seven match European tour but not before their plane was struck by lightning just before touchdown at Heathrow Airport.

Lightning hit the right wing of the plane only five minutes before it was due to land but it did not affect the Australians' arrival in London.

"It gave us a little shake-up," George Gregan (pictured with George Smith) said.

"We were bucking around and then there was a bit of a bang and then a bigger buck," Gregan said.

Coach Eddie Jones was relieved to finally arrive in England after the terrorism scare threatened to put an end to the tour before it began.

"Now that we're on tour and over here we can really get stuck in and focus firstly on the English National Division on the 28th and that's our only concern at the moment," Jones said on arrival.

"We've come to tour in a changed world and we believe we've got a very good risk management practice in place to tour safely and so we're getting on with it."

They open in Leicester next Sunday against a selection from the National Division, effectively the English second division, before Tests against Spain, England, France and Wales.

New captain Gregan acknowledged the English posed the greatest challenge despite their loss to Ireland on the weekend and the Australaians were keen to avenge last year's loss at Twickenham.

"There's no secret that we lost the match last year and the guys were very disappointed by that," he said.

"That's something which is a motivating factor."

The Wallabies have low key buildup to the Test against England at Twickenham on November 10 with next Sunday's match followed by games against Spain in Madrid on November 1 and Oxford University on November 4.

They play France at Marseille November 17 and Wales the week after in Cardiff before finishing the tour with a revivial of the traditional clash with the Barbarians.
