Gregan voted world's best

Wallabies skipper George Gregan is set to be crowned as the world's best player at the International Rugby Players' Association awards dinner in London next month.

Scrumhalf Gregan, 28, captained the ACT Brumbies to the Super 12 title ealier this year and was also a key player in Australia's Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup triumphs, and in the 2-1 series victory over the British and Irish Lions.

More than 150 internationals from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France have voted in a poll to find the players' player of the year. Gregan is the only non-European to finish in the top five.

Lions captain Martin Johnson, Ireland's Keith Wood and Brian O'Driscoll, and Frenchman Philippe Bernat-Salles were also in the top five, according to the Sydney Daily Telegraph.

The winner of the poll will be officially revealed at a dinner in London on November 6th.

Gregan replaced Nick Farr-Jones as the most capped No.9 in Wallaby history during the deciding Test against the British and Irish Lions at Stadium Australia on July 14 by winning his 68th cap.

The battle for Newcomer of the Year is reportedly between Australia's George Smith, England's Jason Robinson, South Africa's Butch James, All Black Leon MacDonald and Italian Mauro Bergamasco.
