Rogers set for Barbarians bow
November 19, 2001

Coach Bob Dwyer has drafted in his Waratahs' rugby league recruit Mat Rogers into the Barbarians squad to face Australia in Cardiff on November 28.

Rogers' inclusion maintains the Barbarians tradition of including an uncapped player in the line-up, though rarely will there have been a more inexperienced selection.

The Australian, a Rugby League World Cup winner last year, only confirmed his switch to union in July when he signed for Bob Dwyer's New South Wales Waratahs and has yet to appear in a full game.

He followed former Kangaroos team-mate and Brisbane Broncos winger Wendell Sailor into the Super 12 after making his name on the wing for the Cronulla Sharks in Australia's NRL.

Rogers was an Australian Schools team-mate of current Wallabies Joe Roff and Ben Tune before pursuing a career in league, but Dwyer, who will coach the Barbarians in Cardiff, has rated him "as good as Wendell".

He is also one of eight players invited to represent the Barbarians for the first time, four of whom are South Africans - Breyton Paulse, Werner Swanepoel plus forwards Mark Andrews and Corner Krige.

British Lions scrum-half Robert Howley will captain a side that includes his former Wales skipper Dai Young, who ended his international days after Argentina's victory in Cardiff the weekend before last.

Carlos Spencer, overlooked by John Mitchell for the All Blacks European tour, is also included amongst the backs while South Africa's fly-half Braam van Straaten will leave the Springboks tour early to feature in the Millennium Stadium before linking up with his new Leeds Tykes team-mates.

Neil Back, who captained England to recent victories over Australia and Romania, is part of an experienced pack which includes former All Blacks Todd Blackadder and Craig Dowd - both of whom are selected by the Barbarians for the first time - and Ian Jones.

French flanker Olivier Magne, who starred in this weekend's victory over the Wallabies, and Wales prop Darren Morris are the other newcomers.
