Huge offer from Japan for Kefu
November 21, 2001

Rampaging Wallaby forward Toutai Kefu has been tempted with a $2 million, three-year contract to play in Japan.

Kefu would have to forego the World Cup in Australia in 2003 if he decides to accept the offer to play with a leading Japanese club.

Only a few weeks ago the 27-year-old said he would remain with the Wallabies until after the World Cup following a plea from his father who wants to see his eldest son play alongside his younger brother Steve in the Australian team.

But a $2 million deal would secure his future at a time when the damaging ball-running forward is thinking about life after football.

Kefu has been the backbone of the Australian pack in recent years and the only forward to rattle the French in last weekend's Test loss to France.

Australian coach Eddie Jones can ill-afford to lose a player of Kefu's quality as he begins to mould a team in preparation for the World Cup.
