Sailor happy with his progress
December 5, 2001

Former Brisbane and Australian rugby league player Wendell Sailor has announced he will play with the Gold Coast Breakers, and says his game has improved since he began training with Queensland.

"What I like about union is that every one does everything," Sailor said. "In league if you are a winger you catch bombs and you do sprints and speed work. At the Reds we are doing everything and for me that has lifted my game."

"I don't regret the move. As much as I miss the Broncos - I feel like I'm always a Bronco for life - union is going to be great for me. But I don't expect to come to rugby and walk into the Reds or the Wallabies or even the Breakers."

While Sailor is happy with his game overall, he says he wants to improve his kicking, even though it isn't the most important part of a winger's repertoire, as evidenced by Jonah Lomu.

"I've been doing extra kicking sessions and I'm probably 50 per cent better kicker than I was two or three months ago at the Broncos," Sailor said.

"I won't change my game too much. At the end of the day I think I am more of an athlete than a kicker or anything else. I'm 27 at the moment and I feel like I am 19 or 20 and getting another chance to start all over again."

Sailor fielded offers from Brisbane clubs Souths and Easts, but with a view to settling on the Gold Coast when he eventually retires from the game, chose the Breakers, whose coach Grant Batty couldn't be happy.

"We obviously won't be seeing Wendell a great deal, but when we do we think it will be a positive experience for everybody," Batty said.

Since making the move from the Broncos, former teammates Darren Lockyer and Gorden Tallis have been merciless in their ribbing, joking with him that playing on the Gold Coast won't compare to a packed crowd at Brisbane games.

"They've been giving me heaps," he said. "They said I'll come down and watch you play for the Breakers in front of 100 people. They said it would be 102 because they'll be yelling out from the hill. I can't wait to play...I don't care if I play in front of 50 people."
