Brumbies get new defensive coach
December 7, 2001

Recently retired representative rugby league player Brad Clyde has joined the Super 12 champion ACT Brumbies as a defensive coach.

The position was previously held by Clyde's ex-Canberra Raiders teammate David Barnhill. It's Clyde's first coaching position since he completed his playing career with English Super League club Leeds three months ago, and he is looking forward to the challenge.

"Rugby has changed a lot and the defensive patterns used in league can really help a side get the edge over their opponents," Clyde (pictured) said.

"I'm really excited about the chance to get involved with the guys and concentrate on defensive patterns."

Clyde, 31, had a distinguished career, playing 214 first grade games for Canberra and Canterbury as well as 18 test matches for Australia and 12 State of Origin appearances for New South Wales.

However, his background in rugby is very limited with Clyde admitting that he has a lot to learn.

"I don't know too many of the finer points of rugby union to tell the truth, but the defensive systems within the two games are very similar and I think that's why the Brumbies showed some interest in myself."

Brumbies coach David Nucifora on Friday rated Clyde a fearless defender and said his players would benefit from his experience.

"Brad's technical expertise in this area, coupled with his attacking prowess in breaking down opposition defences, will be utilised by us," Nucifora said.

Clyde said the Brumbies approached him to join their ranks two weeks ago and he will juggle the part-time job with a marketing role with the Bulldogs.
