Edmonds wary of Rogers
December 23, 2001

Waratahs flyhalf Manny Edmonds will have none of the media talk that league convert Mat Rogers has already secured the No 10 jersey.

Rogers has been training with the Waratahs for the past two months, while Edmonds has only just returned from a European holiday following the Wallaby tour.

During that time, media speculation suggests Edmonds (pictured) has a tough battle in front of him to remain as the Waratahs' No.1 five-eighth after Rogers switched from Sydney league side the Sharks during the off-season. Some are also naming Rogers as Stephen Larkham's long-term replacement as Wallaby pivot.

"It's pretty hard to throw someone in a Wallaby position and say that sort of thing when he hasn't even played a game," Edmonds said. "It's a bit disheartening for not only me but for (Queensland flyhalf) Elton Flatley as well.

"I guess it makes you just want to read the paper then throw it away."

Edmonds made an outstanding start during the Super 12 this year and wants to repeat that form in 2002 so as to ensure he retains his place in the Wallaby squad.

"Ever since Mat has been with the squad, I've pretty much been away with the Wallabies, so hopefully the coaching staff take that sort of stuff into account," he said.

"I was pretty happy with my form last season so hopefully they'll keep me there and put Matty somewhere else.

"Apparently when the squad has been divided into groups, he's been hanging around the inside backs so it might be an indication. It's one of those things. Everyone wants to play somewhere and he wants to play flyhalf so it might be interesting when I go back to training, I suppose.

"(But) at the moment I haven't talked to (coach) Bob Dwyer about positions."
