Healey's 'Try of the Year'
December 26, 2001

The try that started a six-month feud between Austin Healey and Justin Harrison has been dubbed the best try of the year by a British newspaper.

The Independent hailed Healey's injury-time try saved the British Lions from an embarrassing midweek loss to provincial side the ACT Brumbies during the Lions' tour of Australia in June.

The Independent's rugby writer Chris Hewett selected the try highlighting the fact it went through 38 sets of hands belonging to 12 of the 15 Lions.

"This effort was a marvel of collective will and technical precision in the face of what Kipling called 'the unforgiving minute'," Hewett said. "Sport cannot hope to offer a great deal more."

"Suddenly Healey was side-stepping inside two cover tackles and scampering over the line, where he was greeted by a late hit from Peter Ryan and a mouthful of abuse from the ever-charming Harrison."

But Healey's celebrations did not last too long. His outspoken comments in a newspaper column where he labelled Harrison 'an ape, a plod and a plank' were used as an incentive for the eventually victorious Wallabies going into the decising 3rd Test.
