Williams set for Ireland 'A' post

Leinster coach Matt Williamsd is set to take up the post of Ireland A job after guiding Irish provincial side Leinster to this season`s Celtic League title.

The Irish Rugby Union was expected to confirm the appointment of the former NSW Waratahs coach within days.

The news of Williams` elevation comes two days after his former NSW flanker Keith Gleeson, now playing for Leinster, was named in Ireland`s 43-man squad for the Six Nations championship which starts next month.

This is Williams` second season in charge at Leinster after joining the club as assistant coach in 1999-2000 following a controversial three years in charge of the underachieving Waratahs.

He left NSW at the end of the 1999 season to be replaced by Ian Kennedy who encountered the same on-field non-performance and bitter off-field disputes.

Williams has had great success this season, with Leinster winning the Celtic League and securing a place in the quarter-finals of Europe`s Heineken Cup.

He will take over the Ireland A squad from Munster coach Declan Kidney who is now assistant to new national coach Eddie O`Sullivan.
