Aussies take Brisbane 7s glory
February 3, 2002

Tim Atkinson scored two tries in the opening two minutes to set up Australia's 28-0 win over New Zealand in Sunday's final of the Brisbane leg of the World Rugby Sevens series.

The win over the defending series titlists capped winning rugby union debuts for former Australian Rugby League internationals Wendell Sailor and Mat Rogers, who switched codes at the end of last season.

Rogers required medical attention twice in the final and was forced to leave the field during the second period.

Cameron Pither scored three tries for Australia as the hosts advanced to the decider on a 29-5 win over Samoa, while New Zealand rallied to score a try in extra time in its 14-12 semifinal win over South Africa.

Fiji defeated Argentina 12-5 in the plate final, for teams that lost quarterfinals.
