Reds pick Sailor
February 16, 2002

Wendell Sailor has been named in Queensland's squad for its opening Super 12 clash with defending champions the ACT Brumbies.

Having switched to union from league in the off season, Sailor has been picked by the Reds for the match in Canberra next Saturday night, and looks set to slot straight on to the left wing despite playing only one full trial match.

Sailor and Wallaby Ben Tune have been chosen on the wings ahead of rivals Ricky Nalatu and Junior Pelesasa, just days after spending the entire match on the field in Queensland's 60-26 defeat to the Auckland Blues on Wednesday night.

While Sailor didn't stand out in that match, something many of his teammates could also be accused of in the thrashing, coach Mark McBain saw enough in Sailor's efforts to be convinced he will be an asset.

"We were pleased with his involvement on Wednesday in the trial," McBain said. "His strength will be an asset although he still has lots of areas where he needs to improve."

The Reds named a 22-man squad for the Brumbies game, but questions remain as to whether Sam Cordingley or Fijian Jacob Rauluni will start at halfback, and also the makeup of the front row, with the starting side to be announced on Wednesday.

Reds squad: Nick Stiles, Sean Hardman, Fletcher Dyson, Mark Connors, Matt Cockbain, David Croft, Toutai Kefu, Sam Cordingley, Elton Flatley, Wendell Sailor, Steve Kefu, Daniel Herbert (capt) Ben Tune, Chris Latham, Tom Murphy, Glenn Panoho, Mike Mitchell, John Roe, Tom McVerry, Junior Pelesasa, Andrew Scotney, Jacob Rauluni.
