McBain says Sailor must relax
March 11, 2002

Reds coach Mark McBain says Wendell Sailor is a victim of trying too hard as he chases his first try since switching from league.

In three Super 12 matches, as well as an earlier trial, Sailor hasn't managed to touch down but teammate and fellow winger Ben Tune managed a double in Queensland's 27-13 win over the Chiefs at Ballymore on Saturday.

Brewer Castlemaine-Perkins had even planned to shout every fan in the crowd a free XXXX if Sailor (pictured) broke through against the Chiefs, but McBain says his coaching staff hasn't put any pressure on for the scoring to begin.

"He's probably putting that on himself a little bit by saying he wanted to score and everyone's just picked up on it," McBain said. "I suppose the thing about it is it's not come from us.

"It doesn't bother me. All I'm worried about is what we can do. He's been very close and he's probably trying too hard now. And it's something that when it comes it will come."

While Sailor's strong running and defensive work has won plenty of praise, he has also copped his fair share of sledging from the opposition, culminating in spending ten minutes in the sin bin on Saturday along with Keith Robinson after a scuffle.

"There's going to be plenty of jealousy about him, he gets a lot of publicity," McBain said. "A lot of the Kiwis are giving it to him and no doubt the South Africans will give it to him too.

"But I don't think it bothers him because he copped it playing league. He's got a pretty thick hide."

While the Reds have won two of their three games so far, McBain says his team still needs to improve, particularly in reducing the number of penalties it concedes after giving away 18 against the Chiefs.

If any similar number of indiscretions are committed this weekend against the Crusaders, Queensland can expect to be fully punished by Canterbury super boot Andrew Mehrtens, who slotted six penalties and a conversion at the weekend.
