Finegan slams SA standards
April 3, 2002

Wallaby and Brumbies flanker Owen Finegan has added his voice to that of countrymen John Connelly and Mark Ella in blasting the South African Super 12 teams' inept performances in the competition this year.

Connelly and Ella launched scathing attacks on the SA teams in recent weeks, with the latter labelling them clueless.

Finegan, speaking in his exclusive column on sportal.com.au, added his voice to the statements, although he did add that a trip to South Africa remained daunting.

"We had a very successful tour to South Africa, bringing home a maximum ten-point haul for the first time since the Super 12 began. In disposing of the Stormers, I believe the Brumbies played their best away game of football since 1996.

"The South African sides have been very disappointing so far in the Super 12 with only one win against Australian and New Zealand sides in five rounds.

"Their forwards seem to be competitive and up to Super 12 standard, but their backs seem to be void of any attacking sting or flair and our backline scored numerous first phase tries, which does not say too much for their backline defence."

To illustrate the low regard in which South African rugby is held these days, Finegan added that the Brumbies and Waratahs, the two top teams in the competition so far, have had the easier starts with games against the SA sides.

"The Waratahs, like the Brumbies, have had an easy start to the competition, playing the four South African teams and Waikato from New Zealand.

"The Brumbies have played Queensland and the four South African teams. We are both heading into a harder segment of the tournament coming up against the New Zealand teams," he added.
