Campo urges ARU to forget Sailor

Wallaby legend David Campese has urged Australian selectors to forget any plans to include wing Wendell Sailor in the squad for their opening Test of the season against France in June.

Instead Campo believes they should opt for Waratahs' speedster Scott Staniforth in the role vacted by Joe ROff who is currently on a sabbatical with Biarritz.

"I'm not bagging Wendell but there's no way you could put him in there, not on form," Campese told the Daily Telegraph.

"Staniforth has delivered every game and he's one of the leading try-scorers in Super 12. If you go on form, he has to be there. Wendell hasn't really shown anything yet. You wouldn't think of putting him in.

"He scored two tries against the Bulls but he's still trying to find his feet. The difference between him and Mat Rogers (another off-season league convert) is quite noticeable at the moment."

Campese suggested only intervention from the Australian Rugby Union, who bankrolled Sailor's cross-code switch, could bring him into the picture for the two-match series against the French.

"And you would like to think that won't happen," he added.

Staniforth underwent a scan yesterday for a troublesome knee he has carried for some weeks. But the speedster with eight tries in seven Super 12 games this season - including the fourth in a 31-13 win over the Highlanders at the weekend - is expected to get the all clear for the sellout showdown with the ACT Brumbies at Aussie Stadium on Saturday night.
