Brumbies keen to retain Atkinson
April 23, 2002

The Brumbies have revealed they are keen to head off interest from the Reds in former Queensland utility Tim Atkinson.

Atkinson moved to Canberra from Brisbane in the off-season in order to get more of a chance, and has impressed coming off the bench, but the Reds are keen to woo him back with halfbacks Sam Cordingley and Jacon Rauluni possibly headed overseas next year.

While the Brumbies are aware that Queensland has approached Atkinson through QRU managing director Jeff Miller, a team spokesman says they are just as keen to keep him in the nation's capital.

"We've spoken to Tim about it and obviously we're very keen to keep him," the spokesman said. "At the moment he wants to wait until the end of the Super 12 before he considers any options and we'll talk to him then. He told us he's very keen to stay."

Atkinson is expected to start in the centres for the next three matches after a weekend ankle injury to regular centre Stirling Mortlock, while reserve midfielder James Holbeck will also miss Friday's clash with the Hurricanes with a corked leg.

Centre Pat Howard and No 8 Peter Ryan are also in doubt for the match after failing to train on Tuesday with similar injuries to Holbeck, and coach David Nucifora will name his line-up on Thursday.
