Gregan rejects offer
May 7, 2002

George Gregan has declined an offer of a free trip to Rotorua as an apology for an incident that occurred during last Saturday's match between the ACT Brumbies and Waikato.

Gregan was tackled from behind by a local youth who had raced onto the field during a break in play in the Super 12 match, leading to the offer of a holiday from Rotorua mayor Grahame Hall.

But while the 15-year-old youth has been banned for life from attending any games at Rotorua Stadium after running on to win a $200 bet, Gregan said he will be too busy to take up what he believes is a generous offer.

"It's a very kind gesture from the mayor," Gregan said. "They were very hospitable to us while we were there apart from the unfortunate incident on game day. But personally I'll be pretty busy, so I won't be able to take up that offer."

Hall had said he was disgusted by the incident and wanted to try and make it up to Gregan.

"We're not like that in Rotorua. I'd like George to see what we're really like, for him to sample what our region has to offer, and to experience true Rotorua hospitality," Hall said.

"In some small way we'd then be able to make up for the actions of one idiot."

Meanwhile the Brumbies have received a boost ahead of their final Super 12 game of the season against the Blues in Canberra, with second rower Justin Harrison set to play after an ankle injury.

"I'm looking to hopefully have a fitness test tomorrow and run, and then assess it after that," Harrison said. "I am fairly confident. I've had a history of ankle problems and they tend to look quite serious to start with, then recover quite quickly."
