Roff responds to critics
June 2, 2002

Joe Roff bounced back to form to help Biarritz into the final of the French Championship only two weeks after his coach questioned his commitment.

Roff, playing in the centres, helped Biarritz to a 31-12 victory over Montferrand, scoring a try and kicking two conversions and two penalties.

The Australian winger was slated by his coach Patrice Lagisquet for treating his time with French team 'like a holiday'.

But the 26-year-old proved his worth particularly in the final 30 minutes as Biarritz took a grip on a game, played at Bordeaux's Chaban-Delmas stadium, that appeared to be slipping away from them at the start.

Montferrand started brightly and took the lead in just three minutes as Gerald Merceron kicked a penalty. Biarittz finally got into their game as the first-half wore on and Julien Peyrelongue followed up two penalties by team-mate Stuart Legg to get the first try of day.

That took Biarittz in 11-6 at the break and their dominance continued in the second 40 minutes as Phillipe Bidabe and Roff added tries.

Biarittz coasted into the final where they will meet the winners of the Toulouse-Agan clash.
