Slack considers Reds post
June 11, 2002

Former Wallaby captain Andrew Slack has expressed some interest in the Reds coaching job.

Mark McBain was dumped as coach on Monday after two years in the job.

Slack was the Reds assistant-coach under John Connolly from 1993-98. He is a current Wallaby selector.

"I'm still none-the-wiser as to what direction the (QRU) board will take from here," Slack told AAP. "If I get a call, I get a call. I suppose that's the way I'm looking at it ... but I haven't had one in the last 24 hours.

"I've been asked in the last few years whether there has been any role in professional rugby that I was chasing but I've always said 'no' because I haven't always felt that I wanted to.

"If this came to something it would be the first time that I would have felt inclined to listen and not give a straight 'no'."

The new coach will be appointed within a month by a panel headed by Queensland Rugby Union chief executive Jeff Miller.

Meanwhile, McBain said he had not yet been given a reason why he was dumped as Reds coach. During his two years as coach, the Reds finished fourth and fifth.

"I'm still waiting for the reasons because there really haven't been any given," McBain said. "I'm still scratching my head as to why they've done it. But I'm off for a holiday now because I've only had four days off in the last two years."
