Wallaby bar set to for official opening
June 12, 2002

Wallaby fans and rugby supporters alike as of today will have a new venue to take in the game they love in the shape of the Wallaby Bar in Cockle Bay, Sydney.

The oldest living Wallaby Test player John Hammon will open the bar along with ARU Managing Director John O`Neill and a host of past and present Wallabies.

The Wallaby Bar is the first venue of its kind in Australia. It is fully endorsed and licensed by the Australian Rugby Union and features most of the silverware the Wallabies have accumulated in recent years, including the Bledisloe Cup, the Tri Nations Trophy, the Mandela Plate and the Tom Richards Cup.

Architect Leigh Prentice has created a tasteful, modern venue, that will place it firmly amongst the glamorous Sydney bar scene.

A large balcony provides sweeping views across Darling Harbour. Eight state-of-the-art plasma screens will showcase multi-media displays, using photos and footage sourced from the ARU archives and an honour roll lists every Wallaby and every match result since Australia's first Test in 1899.

The Wallaby Bar will be used for ARU events, launches, media conferences and player appearances throughout the year.

It will also be available for public functions of varying sizes, providing a perfect venue for anyone wishing to host a function with a unique rugby flavour.
