Jones bids to keep Bond

Wallaby coach Eddie Jones has launched a last-ditch effort to convince winger Graeme Bond to remain with the Brumbies and not takeup a lucrative contract with Zurich Premiership side Sale.

Jones will seek urgent talks with Wallaby winger Graeme Bond to convince him to stay.

Earlier this week reports claimed that Bond had agreed a move to England pending a medical.

"It is true that I have been approached," Bond, 28, told The Australian. "But I haven't signed anything."

His agent Greg Keenan also indicated the door was still open for the world-class outside back to remain in Australia and with the ACT Brumbies.

"We have had extensive negotiations (with Sale)," Keenan said. "We are a long way down the road. But no deal has been finalised."

It is understood the Brumbies came to the table with a two-year contract for Bond to consider, whereas the Sale offer is for three years.

Jones insisted Bond's Wallaby future was far from over despite him missing selection in the squad to play New Zealand Maori at Subiaco Oval in Perth tomorrow.

Bond, with five Test caps and a veteran of 54 Super 12 games, is still rated highly by Jones who believes he could fight his way back into the side. How he plays for Australia A against France A in Adelaide next Tuesday could have an influence on his chances.

"We would like him to stay in Australia but obviously he has to make a decision and we will take it from there," Jones told the newspaper.

Asked if Bond was still a potential Wallaby selection, Jones said: "That is a discussion we'll be having. The fact he has been picked in the Australia A side indicates that."

ACT Brumbies coach David Nucifora agreed. "It will be a shame if we lose him," Nucifora said. "He still has a lot more to offer."

Nucifora conceded that should Bond leave, the departure would enhance the Brumbies' chances of attaining rugby league star Lote Tuqiri if the Brisbane Broncos winger switches codes.

Aside from leaving a position open in the line-up, it would free up finances that could be offered as an add-on incentive to the Australian Rugby Union's imminent proposal to Tuqiri.

It is understood the offer from Sale would double Bond's salary at the Brumbies - possibly more so in light of the exchange rate.
