Australia 'A' steal victory from France 'A'
June 25, 2002

Australia 'A' produced a stunning comeback to beat France 'A' 37-34 at the NorthPower Stadium in Gosford on Tuesday night.

Lock Rudi Vedelago snatched victory for the homeside with a try almost two minutes after the siren which ensured the Australian second string clinched the series 2-0, following their narrow 32-31 triumph last week in Adelaide.

France appeared to have the game won with a fourteen point lead with a little over ten minutes remaining. But when France 'A' were reduced to 14 men with the sin-binning of Jean Baptiste Ellisalde, the Wallabies, inspired by Duncan McRae, threw the ball wide to stretch the tourists, and eventually claim the win.

Australia 'A' took the early advantage with two penalties from flyhalf Julian Huxley. But the French responded with a try through flyhalf Yann Delaigue took the ball at first receiver in the next phase and stepped around his opposite Julian Huxley for a fine try.

A drop goal from Frederic Cermeno stretched their lead to 10-6, but the home side bounced back with a try from Manny Edmonds. Huxley's conversion made it 13-10 to Australia A, however the lead was short-lived as France 'A' attacked the Australian line off the ensuing kickoff and Matthieu Lievremont crashed over for a try.

The conversion made the score 17-13 to France A at halftime. France 'A' stretched their lead soon after the re-start with a try from Ludovic Valbon after he pounced on a loose ball following an attempted grubber from Andrew Walker.

They reaffirmed their lead with yet another try, this time through lock David Couzinet from a lineout five metres out. Delaigue slotted his fourth successful conversion for a 31-13 lead.

Australia 'A' pegged one back when centre Steve Kefu steamed on to a short ball from replacement flyhalf Duncan McRae from short range.

Australia 'A' then took the decision to run the ball from anywhere on the field but they gave away a soft penalty in their own quarter, which was gladly received by the French for a 14 point buffer.

Inside the last ten minutes, with Ellisalde of the field for a professional foul at a ruck, Walker pushed through another grubber. Manny Edmonds would have scored but was pulled off the ball, however centre Mark Schterbina followed him up for the touchdown.

With seven mintues remaining, replacement scrumhalf Tim Atkinson picked up a great ball from John Roe and sprinted 25 metres for a try that put Australia 'A' within range.

In the closing moments the French desperately defended their line but were repeatedly penalised, and were reduced to 13 men with another sin-binning offence.

Finally the resiliant French defence cracked, when Duncan McRae slipped a superb pass to replacement lock and the youngest member of the Australia A team Rudi Vedelago who scored the winning try.
