Stars turn out in Sydney club competition

Sydney's new club rugby competition, the Tooheys New Cup, looks set to rekindle interest in local matches with a healthy smattering of Super 12 players featured.

No fewer than 16 Super 12 players are slated to turn out for local clubs in the opening round this weekend, with the NSW Rugby Union hoping for a corresponding spark in interest from supporters.

While Super 12 players had often been unavailable or reluctant to play under the previous format, the revamped competition allows Super 12 players not selected for Australia to turn out for their clubs.

Different kick-off times and a number of new playing strips and venues have helped attract the top players, and Wallaby players could potentially also be available later in the competition.

The round kicks off with Graeme Bond's Northern Suburbs taking on Brumby teammate Pat Howard's Sydney University at North Sydney Oval on Friday night.

On Saturday Manly play Eastwood at Manly Oval, Penrith is up against Parramatta at Nepean, West Harbour takes on Eastern Suburbs at Concord Oval and Southern Districts tackles Warringah at Forshaw.

On Sunday the Highlanders play Randwick at NorthPower Stadium.
