South Africa held off a spirited Australian fightback in the second half to win the World Under 21 rugby championships final 24-21 in Johannesburg.

The Australians came back from a 24-9 deficit with two tries after half-time and trailed by three points with 12 minutes remaining.

Australian flyhalf James Brock was wide with an awkward, long-range penalty that would have tied the scores and a minute later a drop goal attempt drifted just wide of the near upright.
