Cannon out for Wallabies
June 30, 2002

Injuries have forced the Wallabies to name an expanded 26-man squad for the opening Tri Nations clash against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday, July 13.

Outside-centre Matt Burke sustained a shoulder injury during Saturday night's 31-25 win against France and did not return after half-time, while hooker Brendan Cannon sustained a knee injury.

Cannon was left out of the squad with Jeremy Paul returning, but he is still rated an outside chance of playing due to his rib injury.

Prop Ben Darwin (ankle) and winger Ben Tune (knee) have recovered from injury, while utility back Andrew Walker was recalled to the squad after playing for Australia A against France A last week.

"Matthew Burke (shoulder) looked good this morning but Brendan Cannon is facing a longer period on the sideline with a strained medial so at this stage he's not in the 26," Wallaby coach Eddie Jones said.

Burke's injury provides an interesting dilemma for Jones with the Brumbies' Stirling Mortlock stepping into his favoured outside-centre spot after Burke left the field. Mortlock, who started on the wing, scored two tries and kicked a conversion and a penalty goal to cap a man-of-the-match performance.

"Stirling certainly played very well at outside-centre and it's something we'll have to consider," Jones said. "He certainly ran some nice lines and made some good breaks."

Winger Wendell Sailor could be the unlucky player to miss out with Tune expected to be fully fit.

"He (Sailor) did some very good things but probably let himself down a couple of times with his hands and missed a couple of tackles," Jones said of Sailor's performance against France. "Again though, he showed what wonderful potential he's got.

"He's going to be a very good rugby player. This season he'll have some ups and downs - it's a tough initiation, he's only played 16 games of rugby and he's doing pretty well."

Sailor admitted on Sunday that with the return to the line-up of Tune, and the performances of Mortlock and Mat Rogers in the second Test, he is expecting to be dropped from the starting line-up and possibly the team altogether for the start of the Tri Nations.

"I expect to be, if not on the bench, I'll probably struggle to stay in the side because Mat Rogers played really well last night," said Sailor. "I dropped two balls which I think I should have caught."

Jones wouldn't discount the possibility of using Sailor off the bench though, saying the versatility of Mortlock, Rogers, Burke and Chris Latham meant Australia can afford to keep him in reserve.

"With the versatility we've got in our side, having a specialist on the bench is a definite possibility," Jones said. "It's still very much in the open ... we want to look at different combinations and see what clicks during the lead-up."

With all the injuries the Wallabies suffered in the second Test, Jones says having Sailor, Tune and Mortlock in the same squad isn't a problem.

"People who say, 'Well you've got too many wingers' - in the space of one week you can lose two good players," Jones said. "Out of the top six Super 12 hookers we could have three out, three could possibly not be available for Saturday week.

"Jeremy mightn't make it, Brendan mightn't make it and we are already missing Adam Freier (ankle) so you can never have too many good players."

The Wallabies will go into camp at Coffs Harbour on Wednesday.
