Slack tipped for Reds job
July 3, 2002

The Queensland Rugby Union is expected to name former Wallaby captain Andrew Slack as Reds coach on Thursday.

Slack and Gold Coast coach Grant Batty are the frontrunners for the position after coach of two years Mark McBain was not offered a new contract.

If chosen, Slack, who played in the centres for the Wallabies, would become the first former backline player to coach Queensland since 1975.

Slack played a record 133 games for Queensland, 39 Tests for Australia, and was Reds backs coach for six years under John Connolly.

The final Reds playing roster will not be completed until after the announcement with management desperate to solve a problem at halfback. This year's halfbacks, Jacob Raulini and Sam Cordingley, are both heading to European clubs.

Brumbies backs Tim Atkinson and Julian Huxley remain in the Reds sights while tighthead prop Fletcher Dyson has not been re-signed.
