New chance for forgotten man Jones-Hughes
July 3, 2002

Wales coach Steve Hansen is prepared to give the forgotten man of Welsh rugby Jason Jones-Hughes the chance to prove his international class.

The Australian-born Newport centre attracted a whole host of publicity when he chose to return to the land of his father's birth before the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

But after two injury-ravaged seasons with the Black and Ambers it appeared Jones-Hughes' hopes of buildning an international career had passed.

But the door has been opened again by Hansen, who has ordered Jones-Hughes to be put through his paces by Wales fitness coach Andrew Hore.

Senior Welsh players who are not on holiday or recovering from injuries are currently having their fitness, strength and power levels assessed by New Zealander Hore.

After making his debut in the 1999 tournament as a replacement in the opening victory against Argentina, Jones-Hughes played only twice more for Wales.

His second appearance came in a win over Japan in that same World Cup and his third in the 2000 Six Nations championship that followed, when his Test career stalled as Wales were hammered 36-3 by France at the Millennium Stadium.
