Herbert welcomes Slack to Reds
July 4, 2002

Queensland captain Daniel Herbert has backed the announcement of former Wallaby captain Andrew Slack as new Reds coach.

Slack replaces former Queensland teammate Mark McBain after his contract was not renewed after two years.

"We know what we're getting with Slacky and he has enormous experience at the highest level," Herbert said.

Queensland Rugby Union chief executive Jeff Miller, another of Slack's former teammates, was confident Slack could take the Reds to the next level and capture the elusive Super 12 title.

"We want to build a team to win the Super 12, not just once, but on a regular basis and I am confident Andrew has the coaching ability and vision that we need," Miller said.

It's Slack's first head-coaching role since he played the last of his 39 Tests in 1987. The 46-year-old was Queensland's backline coach from 1993 to 1998 and has been an Australian selector for the past three seasons.

He played a record 133 games in the centres for Queensland.
