Tuqiri meets with Reds
July 18, 2002

The Australian Rugby Union's newest star, Broncos winger Lote Tuqiri, has met with Queensland Reds officials.

With the Reds, the Brumbies and the Waratahs all keen to secure Tuqiri's services when he switches from league next year, the giant winger and his manager Anthony Picone met with Queensland officials on Thursday to consider an offer.

That meeting will be followed by discussions with officials from the other two teams on Friday, but Picone says while Tuqiri was impressed by the Reds, he won't be making a hasty decision on where to play in 2003.

"He was impressed by what (new Queensland coach) Andrew Slack had to say and the direction he wants to take the Reds," Picone said. "Obviously someone with that experience in the game is going to be helpful.

"He won't rush it. He didn't rush his decision to switch codes, and he won't rush this. He won't make a decision until he feels comfortable."

While playing under Slack and behind a Queensland pack that includes Wallabies Toutai Kefu and Matt Cockbain, one factor that may damage the Reds' chances is the lack of a solid halves combination after Sam Cordingley and Jacob Rauluni's moves overseas.
