Tuqiri set to go south
July 25, 2002

Rugby convert Lote Tuqiri is likely to ignore the comforts of home and launch his new career with the Waratahs or the Brumbies.

The Brisbane Broncos and Australian rugby league winger signed with the Australian Rugby Union last week and it sparked some frenzied lobbying by Australia's three Super 12 sides.

New Queensland coach Andrew Slack was hopeful Tuqiri would join former Broncos teammate Wendell Sailor at the Reds and remain in Brisbane, but it seems the style of the two southern teams have attracted Tuqiri.

Tuqiri is targeting next year's World Cup and he wants to go to the side that will provide the best passage into the Wallabies.

"I've got to weigh all those things up and come up with a decision before the weekend is out I think," Tuqiri said following Broncos training ahead of Friday's game against Parramatta.

The Waratahs are believed to be the front-runners with another league recruit Mat Rogers poised to move to five-eighth from fullback.
