Mehrtens slams referee Watson

New Zealand flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens has slammed referee Andre Watson for the way he handled his side's Bledisloe Cup defeat at the hands of Australia.

The Wallabies retained the Cup after a last minute penalty from Matt Burke clinched a 16-14 triumph.

"I'm not sure if Australia deserved to win. We probably lost the game more so, but we were helped to lose it obviously," Mehrtens said, referring to South African Watson.

"He should be more ashamed than some of us should be," he told New Zealand's Sunday Star Times.

Mehrtens questioned Watson's control of the tackled ball and ruck situations and the offside line.
