Saints snap up Connors
August 14, 2002

Australian forward Mark Connors will be coming to ply his trade in England after all with the news Zurich Premiership club Northampton have secured his signature.

The former Reds No.8, 31, joins new recruits Simon Hepher, Oriol Ripol, Steve Williams and Bruce Reihana at Franklins Gardens.

"I am really looking forward to playing for Northampton Saints," said Connors. "I know it will be an experience I shall enjoy. I am also looking forward to being coached by Wayne Smith."

"Northampton Saints' squad is a smaller one this season - 34 instead of 38 - and it is smaller for a reason," Saints coach Smith told the club's website.

"I wanted to recruit and retain players that could cover a number of positions to give us more flexibility in selection and, more importantly, to create a closer tight-knit group of players.

"Like the rest of our new recruits, Connors has the ability to play in several key positions that we were hoping to improve upon for the 2002/03 season. The club is looking forward to his arrival."

Connors' proposed move to Bath fell threw last month and he had threatened to the West Country club for allegedly reneging on a contract worth more than £100,000 a season.
