Ref attacker will not attend
August 16, 2002

The lawyer acting for banned Springbok fan Pieter van Zyl says his client will not attend Saturday's Tri-Nations Test against the Wallabies in Johannesburg.

Van Zyl, or "Pie Eater" as he has become better known for his ample girth, said he would be at Ellis Park for the game despite the life ban imposed on him following his attack on referee David McHugh during the Durban test between the Springboks and All Blacks.

But Lawyer Bertie Grobler said he had given Ellis Park and South African Football Union authorities an assurance van Zyl would not be at the game. He said his client's statement that he would attend was merely a joke.

Grobler did confirm that van Zyl would contest the life ban.

Van Zyl was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following the incident and has been bailed to appear before a Durban court on September 9.
