Argentina have put forward a proposal to the SANZAR board to be included in the Tri Nations and the Super 12 competitions.

Speaking at the SANZAR board meeting Australian Rugby Union managing director said, "Argentina made a clear case for joining both the Tri-Nations and Super 12 competitions, but there are issues beyond rugby that need to be addressed.

"The TV sponsorship is up for renewal in 2005 and only then will we look at the feasibility of the proposal," he said. "Both tournaments are already logistically difficult and therefore changes must be beneficial to all," he added.

Steve Tew of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union said that SANZAR was bound by the Newscorp deal. "We are bound by the TV deal to remain as the Tri-Nations and I feel that this year's tournament, has, despite the circumstances surrounding it, been one of the best ever," he said, adding that the Tri-Nations would continue to be an annual event until at least 2005.
