Australian fans bitten by RWC bug
September 5, 2002

Rugby clubs throughout Australia have been swamped with membership applications as fans look to increase their chances of getting 2003 World Cup finals tickets.

The Australian reports that the Queensland Reds signed up 120 season ticket-holders in the 24 hours after Tuesday's World Cup ticketing system launch.

Under the Australian Rugby Union's World Cup ticketing policy, club members will be offered tickets from October 14, the public getting its chance six days later.

The Brothers Club in Brisbane reported similar interest. "We've had old boys ring us up from Canberra so obviously the word is getting around," manager Paul Mills said.

Coaching staff at Sydney's Eastwood club had to help man the phones yesterday morning.

Dimity Foster, of Sydney's Gordon club, said: "Inevitably we'll get people who become members just for the sake of tickets. But it's good they're recognising the rugby community."

Phones and cash registers are set to continue ringing at clubs around the countryu until October 1, when the ARU finalises club memberships for ticket eligibility.
