Kefu to be next Wallaby skipper?
October 2, 2002

Toutai Kefu will be offered the Wallaby captaincy if he decides to remain in Australia after the World Cup, according to newspaper reports.

The tempting offer to take over from George Gregan if he retires has reportedly been made by the Australian Rugby Union in the hope Kefu will choose not to go and play abroad.

If Gregan remains as captain, Kefu, 28, may be offered the role of vice-captain.

The Australian reports that the captaincy was dangled in front of Kefu, who has emerged as the best No.8 in the world, as both Australia and Queensland are anxious to keep him after the World Cup.

Kefu rejected a massive offer from Japan to play in the World Cup when he signed a short-term contract with the ARU last year. But he made it clear he would look to go to Japan after the World Cup.

But Kefu said the honour of leading the Wallabies may not be enough to stop him going to Japan.

"I've heard about that (the offer of Wallaby captaincy), but I don't think so," Kefu said. "At this stage there is a fat chance I'll stay. Something extraordinary would have to happen.

"If something falls through in Japan or if my younger brother comes through the ranks quickly ... if we win the World Cup, what else is there? I'm pretty content. It is time to move on."
