Fava wins Catchpole Medal
October 10, 2002
Eastwood backrow forward Scott Fava has Fava, 26, edged out Gordon flyhalf Julian Huxley for the prestigious prize awarded on a 3-2-1 basis by the referees who officiate over the Tooheys New Cup preliminary rounds. Fava will start at number eight in the Tooheys New Cup Grand Final on Saturday against Sydney University. "It's been a remarkable year," commented Fava. "I'd like to pay tribute to the great players around me and the fantastic coaching staff for making it possible. "We still have one game of the season to go to finish off and hopefully Eastwood will be the inaugural winners of the Tooheys New Cup." Ken Catchpole and NSWRU President Ron Graham presented the Catchpole Medal to Fava. The Bundaberg Rum Coach of the Year was awarded to West Harbour's coaching duo of Jo Barakat and Brian Melrose, who steered the Pirates into the Finals. Stuart Dickinson was announced the Trendwest Referee of the Year, in recognition of his outstanding performances as "the man in the middle" throughout the season. His performances during the Vodafone Super 12 won him the Referee of the Series earlier this year.
