October 17, 2002

The John Eales Medal, widely regarded as the Australia's player of the year honour, will be awarded this evening.

A five-man Australian Rugby Union short list released named Nathan Sharpe, George Smith, Toutai Kefu, Stephen Larkham Stirling Mortlock.

Sanctioned by both the ARU and Rugby Union Players Association, the Medal will be presented at Randwick Racecourse by former national skipper Eales.

Players who participated in Australia`s six Tests this year voted on a three-two-one basis after each match.

Stars will also be gathering for the announcement of the Rookie of the Year award where Sharpe is also favoured along with rugby league recruit Mat Rogers.

Try of the year and the Joe French Medal for outstanding services to rugby will also be presented at the the dinner which doubles as a farewell to the Wallabies before they leave next week on their tour.

The Rookie of the Year award will be presented by Trevor Allan, who along with another former Australian captain Colin Windon, will be among 24 Wallabies from the 1930s and `40s recognised at the dinner.

Caps were not handed out during those decades, but will be belatedly presented to the surviving players or to relatives of those who have died.
