RWC security boost

The Australian Rugby Union has revealed it will beef up its security plans for the 2003 World Cup in response to the Bali bombings.

Already planning strict security measures after incidents in Tests this year in which spectators ran onto the field in both Australia and South Africa, ARU managing director John O'Neill told ABC Radio the Bali events had brought the issue into focus again.

"We are very conscious of the terrible events in Bali last week and we are receiving expert advice from the various governments - federal and state governments - assisting us at a centralised level and giving us the best information possible," he said.

Thousands of overseas visitors are expected to attend the biggest sporting event held in Australia since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and the possible presence of the United States has also heightened the ARU's vigilance.
