Webber targeted fifth on grid

Mark Webber said he targeted fifth on the grid for the Bahrain Grand Prix after his penalty so is disappointed to start seventh.

A collision with Jean-Eric Vergne in the Chinese Grand Prix last weekend cost Webber a three-place grid penalty in Bahrain. Webber revealed that he was expecting to be second in qualifying in order to start the race in fifth, leaving him slightly disappointed with his final grid slot but happy to save a set of hard tyres.

"It's not too bad; we saved a set of primes in Q1 so we're going to see how that will unfold tomorrow in the race for us," Webber said. "Whether it's an inspired call or not we'll find out. I think Lewis [Hamilton] has got a penalty too so fortunately I gain a bit of a position there so it's a bit of a penalty competition! Seventh on the grid with an extra set of primes is not too bad. I expected fifth with the penalty so seventh is not as far up as I would like. The lap itself wasn't great in Q3 to be fair; there were a few things which could have been a bit better but that's how it goes."

Webber also said that the windy conditions made putting together a good lap in qualifying difficult.

"That's a big factor for us here; to understand how the cars are going to behave with the changing wind conditions. They're very sensitive to the change of direction and that's something that the team obviously work hard on to make sure that the drivers are comfortable with where the wind is during qualifying."
