Scotland and Gloucester scrum-half Rory Lawson has signed a two-year contract with Newcastle Falcons.

The 31-year-old follows Carlo del Fava and Scott MacLeod in signing with the Falcons, despite doubt remaining over which league they will be in next season. The Falcons will retain their Aviva Premiership status - despite finishing bottom this season - if London Welsh fail to win the Championship promotion play-off or fail to fulfil the promotion criteria.

Lawson said: "I'm really looking forward to joining up with the Falcons this summer. Newcastle's form towards the end of the season was strong and there is a lot we can build upon for next year to move the club forward.

"Having met with (club owner) Semore Kurdi it is clear that the Falcons have significant resource and intent to build a successful club in the north-east, and the appointment of Dean Richards can only enhance that."

Lawson, who joined Gloucester from Edinburgh in 2006, has won 30 caps for Scotland after making his international debut against Australia in November 2006. He made two starts in last year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand but fell behind Mike Blair and Chris Cusiter for the Six Nations championship.
