John Kirwan has been named as Barbarians coach for the Killik Cup clash against Australia at Twickenham on November 1. The Barbarians also confirmed that Kirwan will be in charge when they face Leicester at Welford Road three days later.

Kirwan, 49, played a starring role during the All Blacks' 1987 World Cup triumph and scored 35 tries during his Test career. He subsequently filled senior coaching roles with the Italy and Japan national teams, and is the current Auckland Blues head coach.

The Baa-Baas clash will launch a demanding November schedule for Australia during which they will meet England, Wales, Ireland and France.

"In my view, it's the first Test of their tour. That is what they will be expecting and that is what we want to deliver," Kirwan said. "It's a privilege and a huge honour to be involved with the Barbarians again. Every year the Barbarians are put under pressure, but it's still a huge honour to play and they still compete with the very best." More than 50,000 tickets have so far been sold for the match.
