Phillips: London Welsh's future is bright

London Welsh head coach Rowland Phillips is adamant the future is bright at the Exiles despite their relegation being confirmed on Sunday.

The Exiles fell to a 29-14 loss at home to Bath and in the process confirmed they will be playing their rugby in the Championship next term. It was their 18th defeat in the Aviva Premiership this term and they remain on one solitary point at the foot of the league.

But despite their relegation now being confirmed, Phillips, who replaced Justin Burnell in charge of the Exiles on March 16, is optimistic for the future and the rest of the season.

"We had a lot of positives today and we will be looking to build on that performance," he said. "The club is too proud just to switch off and accept defeat. There is always speculation and rumour at this time of the season, but the key thing is that you learn your lessons. We know we are relegated but our ambition to come back is greater than ever."

Up next for the Exiles is Wasps on April 12 and Phillips wants his team to continue progressing ahead of next season.

The mind-set has to be to continue to build on what we've already started building. We'd certainly have one eye on next season," he said. "We have to learn our lessons. Certainly the ambition is as great as ever. The real honest ambition of a club will be portrayed on the field and you saw 23 guys who put their lives and soul on the pitch for us today. The future is bright."
