Melbourne Rebels have suffered a hefty blow, losing leading prop Laurie Weeks for up to eight weeks with a leg fracture.

Weeks suffered the injury in Friday's loss to the Hurricanes in Wellington. Scans confirmed a fracture of his left tibial plateau. While he does not require surgery, he is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks.

"He is a wonderful, positive influence on the group, and his experience is invaluable; we'll miss that on the field," the Rebels' Head of Athletic Performance Bryce Cavanagh said.

"In saying that, Laurie's positive approach to his Rugby and to demanding the best from himself and the group will see him tackle his rehabilitation with a determined mindset, and we're looking forward to welcoming him back to the group in the second half of the season."

The Rebels welcome Queensland Reds to AAMI Park on Friday night.
