Gloucester sign former league star Goulding

Gloucester coach Philippe Saint-Andre has snapped up former Great Britain rugby league start Bobby Goulding on a week's trial in the hope he will answer his side's injury crisis.

The 28-year-old - who can play scrum half and fly half - will make his union debut for the club's second team against their Bristol counterparts on Monday night.

Gloucester need cover at number 10 for Simon Mannix because Byron Hayward will be out of action for another month after dislocating his shoulder.

Goulding, capped 17 times by Great Britain, was released by his fifth club Wakefield before the end of the Super League season amid a cash crisis that threatened the Wildcats' very existence.

He almost joined French union club Narbonne in January but eventually signed a one-year contract with Wakefield.

There have been suggestions that he will return to his hometown club Widnes or even Salford City Reds but Saint-Andre confirmed: "An agent told me he was available and he's on trial for a week.

"I have watched him play rugby league but he wanted to play the 15-man code and he was keen to come on trial.

"I think he will play 40 minutes at fly-half and 40 at scrum half against Bristol United."

If he impresses coach Philippe Saint-Andre then he could be included in the squad for Saturday's Zurich Premiership clash against the same opponents at Kingsholm.
