Woodward extends development squad

England boss Clive Woodward has added six extra players to his previously announced development squad.

The 21-strong group, which includes players like Liam Botham, Andy Long and Andrew Sheridan - all England tourists in South Africa this summer - will also train alongside manager Woodward's senior squad building towards next year's Six Nations Championship.

The latest additions are all uncapped, and have won call-ups following extensive scouting missions by Woodward and his coaching team.

Gloucester forwards Andy Hazell and Adam Eustace, Newport flanker Peter Buxton, Leeds lock Tom Palmer, Newcastle fly-half David Walder and 18-year-old Bath number 10 Ollie Barklay join the players originally selected.

Flanker Hazell made a try-scoring substitute's appearance for Gloucester in their crucial Heineken Cup victory over Llanelli last week, while fellow back-row man Eustace has recently moved up to lock with great success.

Cheltenham-born Buxton, 22, has commanded England attention following some blockbusting displays for Newport in the Welsh-Scottish League this term, while 6ft 5in Palmer is a Leeds first XV regular.

Walder, Falcons' promising fly-half understudy to Jonny Wilkinson, will make his first start of the season when Newcastle host European Shield opponents Cross Keys on Sunday.

"I am gobsmacked," said Walder, before training with Newcastle on Thursday. "It is wonderful news, even though I can't quite believe it."

Barklay's elevation is perhaps the biggest surprise, given that he has yet to play a first team game for Bath.

But the teenager is being nurtured through Bath's impressive academy system, and has been tipped to enjoy an outstanding rugby career.
